I am a first year at UNC Chapel Hill pursuing my degree in Media and Journalism at the Hussman School. Currently, I plan on concentrating in Advertising and Public Relations. Moreover I am heavily considering the entrepreneurship minor through the Shuford program to push me to be self-sufficient as these industries often require taking risks.
In highschool I worked as the Media Manager for my school’s instagram page. Moreover, I operated as the publicist for our two major leadership organizations – National Honor Society and Student Council. Through these experiences I learned the value of leadership through communications.
To hone my skills, I have aspirations to become a coach at the Writing Center in the coming year as well as growing my skills for my future career in Advertising. I hope to become a social media marketing intern in the fall or the spring to further my skill set. My time at Hussman has already exposed me to a wealth of resources allowing me to grow in these skills — AP Style, Premiere Pro, WordPress and many others.
For instance, I have taken MEJO 121, 137 and 153 in my first year. These classes have already pushed me to learn more about the industry and what it takes to be a better content creator. Next year, I will diversify my media skills by learning about ethics, public relation campaigns and advertising research insights through MEJO 141, 332 and 379.
Outside of academics I enjoy listening to music and reading critic reviews. Although I don’t frequently agree with them, I find it interesting to see how others perceive music and all of its artistry. Therefore, music journalism has inspired me to pursue a career with some relevance to the entertainment industry.
To stay current with music and performances, I love to attend concerts. When I’m there I love to analyze the stage design, costuming and set lists to get a full sense of the intention of the tour. Even if I do not physically attend these shows, keeping up with them and their progress through social media can be very insightful. For instance, Beyoncé has just begun her Cowboy Carter tour, with fresh stage visuals and costuming. I am excited to observe this tour through its next dates.
I also love to experiment with different creative outlets. I can sew — by hand and machine, knit, crochet, paint, draw, PhotoShop, edit videos, 3D print and many more. I tend to want to explore every option I have, leading me to have a diverse skill set.
Additionally, I take health and fitness seriously. Yoga and pilates are two of my favorite ways to stay active and get out of my own head. Moreover, the different group fitness classes offered by UNC have been a great way to lessen my academic stress in the past year. I have learned that barre is one of my favorite ways to workout! I encourage all UNC students to try a Campus Rec class at some point!
As a result, my desire to learn about creativity in many facets has gotten me where I am today. This passion has inspired me to become a MEJO major to hopefully break into the media, fashion or entertainment industries.
